Kindred Dragons by ~koooldawg:iconkoooldawg:

She didn't want me to go. This trip to Uppsala, a town just north of Stockholm, Sweden, would prove to be my longest yet and hopefully my last. My fiance, Sophie, said she had a bad feeling about it and didn't want me to go. My crew was all set to go, so there was nothing I could do. I decided to bring her along... the results changed us, but I'm glad she came.

“Honey,” she asked me, her eyes locked with mine, “what's so important about this trip?” To be honest I was lost in her gorgeous, emerald green eyes... I hope those never change. She could be completely deformed and those eyes would still draw me in. “Anyone home up there?” Sophie said, tapping my head.
“I'm sorry, love.” I stuttered. I'm sure my cheeks were getting red. “Well, a local in Uppsala found a cavern that looked like it had some old relics. We think we may be able to finally prove the past existence of Dragons.”
“Really?!” She was so cute when she was excited. We had both always loved Dragons, but she was far more into them. I just came into looking for them when I found some bones on an expedition. These bones looked like a T-Rex with longer arms and large wings. None of my colleagues believed me, they thought it was just multiple layers of bones or something. I was sure.

It was a nine hour flight and about an hour in she fell asleep on my lap. I was running my hands through her silky smooth, golden, blond hair when I heard...
“Sir, I don't mean to bother you, but...” Joe, my contact with Sweden, whispered, “the Swedish government doesn't want us excavating so close to the town.” That sucked, because it meant that we would have to go into the cavern and retrieve artifacts through the small opening.
“So, what does the mean exactly?” I sighed, “Will we be able to take back artifacts?”
“Not unless they are small enough to fit through,” Joe replied, “they did tell us that if we find something worth it, they may allow us to open up the hole... only after they approve it.”
“Then why do I care?” I snapped, “We've had this issue before haven't we?!”
“What's the matter?” Damnit, I woke up Sophie.
“Nothing, just lay your head back down.” I whispered to her and forced her head back onto my lap. I turned back to Joe, “We still have four hours to go before we are in Sweden. We will worry about this then.”

We met with some local government types, had lunch, and discussed our plans. We were to only look in the cavern and retrieve small artifacts. Larger artifacts were to be documented and a decision would be made later on whither to excavate. We were okay with that.

I don't know why Sophie came to the site with us, but she is so hard to say no to. We got there at about 9AM local time and it wasn't until 11AM that we were ready to enter. I went first, followed by Sophie, and then the local that found the cavern and a translator. The rest of my crew stayed outside. The local stepped ahead and pointed at the opposite wall.
“Den här er saken en talat du av.” The man said.
“This is the thing a told you of.” The translator answered. We looked at it closely. It was a beautiful bronze necklace, that looked like two dragons forming a heart.
“It's so pretty!” Sophie shouted and walked towards it quickly.
“Wait!” I yelled, but it was too late she had picked it up. She was admiring it and held it out for me.
“Hold on,” the translator said, “something it written here... “I lever den själ av två hinder.” He paused, “In lives the souls of two dragons.”
“Really?!” Sophie squealed, “It says that?” She stuck our hands together, with the amulet in between..
“There is more.” He read, “När två slag sprit hålla den här , de vilja bli hinder sig.... When two kindred spirits hold this, they will become dragons themselves.” He gave me an awkward look.
“AWWW! Springa Hinder komme!” The swedish man screamed and ran out of the cave. Before I had a chance to ask what the man said I noticed a bright light emanating from our hands... the amulet was glowing.
“What the f...” I was interrupted by sharp pain and I could feel that Sophie felt the same pain. We dropped to the ground.
“Help! Someone Help!” The translator yelled and ran out of the cavern. I felt like I was growing larger, but I couldn't have been. I looked at my hand on the warm rock and I saw it turning blue. I was in too much pain to to anything about it, as I watched my four fingers become two and grow larger, along with my thumb. My arms gave way, under a sudden new weight and I fell to the ground.
What I saw next hurt me more then my physical pain... Sophie wasn't Sophie. Her blond hair was all laying on the cave floor and there lay what looked like a large red lizard, with human legs and a stubby tail. I thought pasted my mind, that maybe the writing on the was was right, but it was interrupted by sudden sharp back pain. I rolled over onto my butt and watched as my legs turns blue and scaly. I looked behind me and a blue tail started growing out of my back. I blacked out.

When I came to, we were out in the sun light. I looked around, a beautiful, ruby red Dragon, lay curled up in a ball on my right and there were a bunch of scared looking humans to my left... but they seemed much smaller. I spotted Joe.
“Joe!” My voice boomed, “What happened?”
“Is that you? Robert?” Joe stuttered. “The translator said that an amulet did this. He said it said in the cave that it would turn kindred spirits into Dragons.”
“I guess so,” I sighed. I rolled over and shook the ground when my knees hit the rocks. I placed my hand, or whatever it was now, on the shoulder of the red Dragon. “Is that you Sophie? Honey?” She lifted her head and opened her eyes. Once I saw those green beauties, I knew it was her.

The cavern was destroyed by our sudden growth... so much for not excavating. We did accomplish what we set aside to do... prove that Dragons exsist.

Author's Comments

I want to get back into writing, so I asked for requests. ImmortalDragon ( [link] ) was the only one to request anything. I thought about it for a few days and this is what I was able to spit out. I think it's pretty good, but that's just a lonely writer's opinion. PLEASE COMMENT!!

I have grown tired of the world around me and wish for eternal slumber. If you can give me that then I will give you peace of mind.

lots of people like dragons. the story ends before explaining what happens after they transform. we really don't know how good of a life they'll lead in the modern world, but we'd hope it would be peaceful ;)
